On Thursday I had the pleasure of welcoming Lakeland Mayor Gow Fields to Tallahassee. Mayor Fields brought business leaders from our community to the Capitol as part of the Mayors Mean Business Initiative, an effort to highlight the important role cities have in economic development and job creation. Businesses need a strong and cooperative relationship with city and state officials if they are to maximize success. Thank you to our business leaders for your advocacy in fostering those important partnerships and in voicing your concerns about the challenges you face.

Commissioner Putnam Applauds the House State Affairs Committee for Voting in Support of Bill to Improve School Nutrition

Tallahassee, FL – The House State Affairs Committee today joined the Senate Agriculture Committee in supporting Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam’s Healthy Schools for Healthy Lives Act, a bill intended to expand school access to Florida’s fresh fruits and vegetables by moving school nutrition programs to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

Lawmakers Cheer Scott’s Intentions

Gov. Rick Scott was preaching to the choir of fellow Republican legislators in his inaugural address Tuesday, but lawmakers are waiting for the scripture numbers.

Rep. Seth McKeel, R-Lakeland, is chairman of the House State Affairs Committee and will be seeing a great deal of Scott-initiated legislation come across his desk.

“We haven’t seen the whole list of what the governor wants, but his streamlining government and regulations are things we all want,” McKeel said. “He clearly did talk more about parental choice in education, and I look forward to seeing the particulars.

“We are all for him, but we are looking forward to the details,” he said.

Rep. McKeel describes Florida Open, Transparent Redistricting Process

Rep. McKeel, in a recent article in The Ledger, describes the impact that the 2010 Census had on Florida and the changes to come to the state.

In the article, Rep. McKeel stated “What I can tell you is that Rep. Will Weatherford, chair of the Redistricting Committee, is putting together the most public and interactive redistricting process that Florida has ever seen. The Florida House will be putting the district-building program on the Internet and asking members of the public to submit maps and ideas for where districts should be drawn.”

Hillsborough Legislative Delegation Gets New Leaders (Tampabay.com & St. Petersburg Times)

Seth McKeel III, R-Lakeland, took over the chairmanship of the Hillsborough County legislative delegation Tuesday, which carries little reward besides getting to preside over the body’s interminably long annual meeting. McKeel was previously vice chairman and took over the chairmanship under the delegation’s rules.

The delegation then selected Ronda Storms, R-Valrico, as its vice chair. That means she should become chairman of the delegation next year. Read More…

LAKELAND | State Rep. Seth McKeel, entering his third two-year term, has moved into the senior leadership group in the Florida House following his appointment Monday by Speaker of the House Dean Cannon to be chairman of the State Affairs Committee.

The Lakeland Republican will be in the thick of issues today as the Legislature meets to override several vetoes by Gov. Charlie Crist.
